First Policy on Partnership in MENA Adopted in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq

30-09-2013
The policy for cooperation between public authorities and NGOs was ratified by the Kurdistan Region Parliament in June 2013 and signed by NGOs on September 4, 2013 .

ECNL experts provided key expertise and facilitation in the development of the Compact, the first policy of its kind in the MENA region.

The Compact on Partnership and Development between Public Authorities and Non-Governmental Organizations in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq lays the basis for stronger and better partnerchip between public authorities and the civil society sector. The Compact will empower CSOs in the Kurdistan Region to express opinions and participate in the design and implementation of policies and laws.

During the past year, ECNL worked extensively with local partners and provided expertise for the stakeholders in the drafting and the consultation process of developing the document and also organized a study visit for Kurdish experts to Estonia on issues pertinent to participation.

For more details on the specific activities that have taken place so far in the Kurdistan region, as well as on the federal level, please visit the thematic subpage of the Iraqi project on our website.

The process of developing and implementing the Compact is supported by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and funded by the Government of Denmark.
