During the 32nd UN Human Rights Council Session (UN HRC), the UN Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, Maina Kiai, will present his fifth annual report to the UN HRC. The report will address the Special Rapporteurs’ activities since February 2015 and examine the impact of fundamentalism on the rights to freedom of association and assembly. At the same time, the UN HRC will be considering a number of relevant follow-up resolutions including on the renewal the special rapporteurs’ mandate and on protecting and promoting civil society space.
In addition, as his tenure as special rapporteur comes to a conclusion in 2017, the 32nd Session provides a crucial occasion to engage with Mr. Kiai on priorities and planned activities for the remainder of his mandate.
Therefore please, join us for a closed-door meeting with Maina Kiai to discuss:
- Projects and priorities for year six;
- How civil society can support the implementation of recommendations from his 2015 annual report;
- Coordinating efforts on complementary resolutions and guidelines on civic space.
The meeting will include an interactive question and answer session with civil society and the special rapporteur.
All members of civil society organisations are welcome to attend, but due to limited space, please RSVP to [email protected] before Tuesday, June 14. Space at the meeting will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
The closed door meeting is organized by ICNL and ECNL, under the Civic Space Initiative project together with Article 19, CIVICUS and World Movement for Democracy.
