Background
The European Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ECNL), together with partners around Europe, are leading the Monitoring Action for Civic Space (MACS) project. The overall project objective is to promote democratic rights and European values by empowering civil society.
The two main outputs to be developed under the project are:
- a monitoring methodology for the civil society environment; and
- an early warning system to alert EU institutions on threats to civic space in member states (coupled with a menu of possible responses to such threats by the EU institutions).
Using the developed methodology, national partners have produced country reports assessing the status of civic space in seven EU Member States.
Purpose and scope of the assignment:
ECNL seeks a professional editor/proofreader to review the seven country reports and ensure they are clear, consistent, accurate, and aligned with organisational style and quality standards.
The consultant will be responsible for editing seven country reports (typically 10-15 pages each). Tasks include:
- Editing and proofreading grammar, spelling and punctuation.
- Ensuring clarity, logical flow, and internal coherence of narratives.
- Verifying consistency in terminology and style in line with the project’s editorial guidelines.
- Correcting inconsistencies in data presentation, citations, or formatting.
- Suggesting improvements to enhance reader comprehension and accessibility for non-specialist audiences.
- Collaborating with report authors and the research coordinator as needed.
Period of implementation:
Under the assignment, up to 10 days are planned during the period of 11 December 2025 – 10 January, 2026.
Required qualification, skills and experience:
- At least 5 years of documented experience in editing/proofreading analytical reports.
- Proven expertise in human rights, governance, civic space, or civil society issues.
- Exceptional command of written English.
- Familiarity with international standards and terminology related to civic freedoms.
- Experience working with CSOs, international organisations, or research institutions is an asset.
