Serbia misuses anti-terrorism laws to curb work of NGOs

UN human right experts warn that such practices interfere with and limit the freedoms of expression and association.

UN Special Rapporteurs expressed concern that Serbian authorities are using oversight powers designed to target the financing of terrorism to obtain banking information and information on financial transactions of more than 50 CSOs, media associations and other groups working on human rights and investigative journalism.

ECNL provides assistance to Serbian partners to push back against such limitations and works with international bodies to ensure security-related policies and laws are not cited as justification to restrict civic freedoms.
