New technologies have become instrumental and increasingly important to the right to peaceful assemblies. This trend has been accelerated by the impact of COVID-19 pandemic. ICT and AI technologies provide many possibilities to enable and facilitate the organization of protests, but also have a downside effect by allowing States and private actors to restrict the right of peaceful assemblies.
The UN High Commissioner addressed the issue by publishing her report on the Impact of new technologies on the promotion and protection of human rights in the context of assemblies, including peaceful protests.
