At the Hague International Open Day — an annual event when human rights organisations based in the Hague open their doors to the public - ECNL spoke at a panel discussion on how counterterrorism measures impact human rights (defenders). The event, held at Het Nutshuis and organised by the Netherlands Helsinki Committee (NHC), Human Security Collective and Justice and Peace attracted over 100 participants. Eszter Hartay, Senior Legal Advisor at ECNL opened the discussion by providing a broad introduction to the topic, including the types of counter-terrorism measures and their impact, why countries introduce such measures and why they are counterproductive. She illustrated the global nature of the trend: “This issue is like something in the water…It is affecting us all.”
