EU Council proposal not efficient to fight SLAPPs, warns civil society

17-03-2023
Only robust mechanisms can provide meaningful protection for public watchdogs facing abusive lawsuits for their public interest work.

The Coalition Against SLAPPs in Europe (CASE) wrote to the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the EU to express concern about the draft compromise proposal for the European anti-SLAPP Directive.

CASE warns that the new compromise proposal waters down crucial protections set out in the Commission's proposal from April 2022. It fails to meet the expectations of the European Parliament, as it radically narrows the scope of safeguards from abusive lawsuits targeting public watchdogs such as journalists, human rights defenders, and civil society organisations engaging in public participation.
