Moneyval should open up formalised channels for civil society engagement

16-07-2021
CSOs from the Moneyval region, lead by ECNL, call for a consistent and meaningful dialogue with the FATF regional body.

Over 55 organisations from South-East Europe, lead by ECNL, urge Moneyval, a FATF regional body, to establish formal access and engagement mechanism with the non profit sector. The initiative kicked off after two regional meetings ECNL hosted with civil society from the Western Balkans and Eastern Europe regions.

CSOs ask for a more formalised and meaningful engagement with Moneyval. Their open letter builds on initiatives ECNL previously addressed to the FATF and takes FATF as an example for starting these longer-term engagement processes.

Moneyval Secretariat has responded favourably to the letter and agreed to discuss the topic in September.  This is a promising first step in creating consistent engagement with the civic sector to ensure that FATF standards are not misused - a practice that can hopefully be initiated in other regions, as well.
