Workshop in Istanbul on tools to monitor freedom of association

ECNL led a discussion to design such a tool for Turkish NGOs.

On March 12, the Third Sector Foundation of Turkey (TUSEV) organized a workshop in Istanbul on the tools to monitor Freedom of Association for approximately 30 participants from different fields of the nonprofit sector.

At the request of TUSEV, ECNL has prepared a short paper on alternative mechanisms for monitoring the implementation of law on civil society organizations. The paper contains examples of monitoring approaches that apply more broadly to human rights, civil society, business organizations, etc.; these examples are designed to provide reference points for the monitoring exercise to be undertaken in Turkey.

The paper concludes with a more detailed focus on the Monitoring and Tracking Tool developed by ECNL’s affiliate organization, the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ICNL), as this may be the monitoring mechanism most directly relevant to needs of Turkish stakeholders, and could potentially be adapted to the Turkish context. The paper will be finalized and made available on ECNL's website shortly.
