Draft proposal of Law on Volunteering adopted by Macedonian government

25-04-2007
ECNL supported the government in developing the draft and worked with partners to organize consultations with CSOs and other stakeholders.

The Macedonian Government adopted the final draft proposal of the Law on Volunteering and submitted it to the Parliament. The draft law introduces a legal definition of volunteering, and thus distinguishes it from employment or other types of labor law relationships. It also prescribes the rights and obligations of volunteers, it determines and regulates the volunteering of foreigners. Importantly, it also introduces exemptions from tax on reimbursements issued for volunteers.

If the law is adopted by the Parliament it will create a legal framework which could help incite civic engagement in social and local issues and protect and promote volunteering in the society.

ECNL activities to support the drafting of the law were conducted under the Civil Society Strengthening Project, implemented by the Institute for Sustainable Communities and funded by USAID/Macedonia.
