European Movement Estonia (EME) has bestowed the title “European of the Year 2010” on Mall Hellam, Executive Director of the Open Estonia Foundation and Supervisory Board Member of ECNL.

From EFC's website:

EME’s Director Kristiina Ling said that Mall Hellam’s work had helped connect different layers of Estonian society to Europe, be it through ideas and knowledge or people and organisations.

“With this award we express our gratitude to Mall Hellam for creating a better awareness about European values and ideas in Estonia,” Ling explained. “Mall Hellam’s courage and open mind sets an example to all participants in today’s civil society – from volunteers to politicians. She has helped build a bridge to take ideas of an open and integrated society to people right where they live and act.”

Upon receiving the award, Ms Hellam said that

“For me, Europe is freedom. Belonging to Europe guarantees the freedom of Estonia, just as respecting European values guarantees our freedom as individuals.”

European Movement Estonia is a pro-European civil society organisation acting as a discussion forum for people and associations interested in the European Union. EME is a member of the international European Movement network. ECNL congratulates Ms. Hellam upon her recent award.
