UNHRC recognizes freedom of internet access

The ground-breaking resolution call on Member States to facilitate access.

In July the UN Human Rights Council adopted in a ground-breaking vote the Resolution on promotion, protection and enjoyment of human rights on the Internet. The text of the resolution was presented by Brazil, Nigeria, Sweden, Tunisia, Turkey and the United States and was co-sponsored by around 80 countries. In accordance with Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights,

the Council recognizes the global and open nature of the Internet as a driving force in accelerating progress towards development in its various forms and calls upon the member states to "to promote and facilitate access to the Internet and international cooperation aimed at the development of media and information and communications facilities in all countries."
